The difference between a mirror and a diagnosis
A diagnosis claims authority. It says here is what is true about you, backed by method. A mirror makes no such claim. It just reflects back what you put in front of it, and lets you decide what to do with the image. These quizzes are firmly the second thing. Your answers go in, a tidy result comes out, and the only expertise involved is in making it funny.
Why the honest version is better anyway
The catch is that a mirror is only useful if you stand in front of it honestly. Answer a quiz as the person you wish you were and you get a result about a person who does not exist. Answer as the person you actually are, on a normal Tuesday, and the result occasionally lands hard enough to be worth sitting with for a second. Not because the quiz is smart. Because you were honest.
Take the feeling, leave the verdict
So the right way to use any of this is to notice what you feel when the result appears, and ignore the result itself. If it calls you a menace and you are delighted, that is information, about you, not about the quiz. If it calls you well adjusted and you are quietly disappointed, that is the interesting part. The number is just the thing that produced the reaction.
Entertainment that occasionally tells the truth
None of this is an accident. The quizzes are written to be entertainment first, because entertainment is what gets taken and shared. But entertainment that asks you specific questions about your own behavior has a way of occasionally telling the truth by accident. That is the best a mirror can do, and it is plenty.
